Dawn Atherton, President & USIHC Liasion

Dawn & Osp fra Litladal, my first Icelandic Horse - the mare that started it all.  I was introduced to Icelandic Horses in 1999 via my sister.  I've ridden horses all of my life, but an Icelandic mare by the name of Brunka gave me my first ride on a gaited horse in 1999.  I knew from that very first ride that this was the breed of horse I had been searching for.  I aquired Osp in the fall of 2000, and since that time, have grown an amazing bond with each other.  In my non-horsey life, I work as Marketing Manager for a State Farm Insurance office in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan (Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan).

Tim Haynes, Vice President

Tim & Ljufur, Kathy & Fjossi - Tim and his wife, Kathy, have owned Icelandic Horses for 8+ years.

Hope Ellis, Treasurer
I think it would be accurate to say that my interest in horses has been lifelong.   I can remember that my grandmother told me stories of how her family took their  standardbred harness horses to the rural fairs to compete -- my love of equines must come from her as there isn't anyone else in the family that has been similarly interested.

In the 70's my husband and I were very involved with breeding and showing Arabians.     When we decided that we had had enough showing, I went back to pleasure riding, competitive trail riding, fox hunting with a variety of breeds  -- have used my horses for many different types of competition and "fun".   I purchased my first Icelandic in New Mexico where I  was visiting our family and Icelandic farms in the area.   I had never heard of the breed, but after riding them for 6 weeks, I was sure this would be a good breed for me.  I  purchased a black gelding and had him shipped to Michigan and used him for fox hunting for several years.    He is still with us and as healthy and energetic as a youngster.    We have added two other Icelandics -- a gelding I searched for and purchased  in Iceland and an American bred  pinto mare that is just old enough to train this year.   I mainly ride them across country, but also try to participate in a few clinics and shows that are within driving distance of Michigan.    I still take lessons and try to improve my riding.

I joined GLIHA in 2000 as a charter member and have enjoyed our members and the  fun times that we have had with our horses.    I have held the office of treasurer since GLIHA had its first beginnings.    Plans for the future include a move to Boulder, Colorado,  to be nearer to family and an opportunity to do some riding in the mountains.   I will miss my friends in GLIHA and hope that the club continues to grow and provide fun for its members.
Danielle Atherton, Secertary

Danielle co-owns two Icelandic mares with her sister Dawn. Before finding Icelandics, she devoted her time to Saddlebreds. Now she spends her time riding and showing this wonderful breed.

When not in the saddle, Danielle is a claims rep for State Farm.
